Mayflower District Camporee in historic Portsmouth
In May, Troop 401 participated in the Mayflower District Spring Camporee held at Sandy
Acres campsite near Portsmouth. Having regard to the regular Transatlantic Council
camporees at Normandy which commemorate the Normandy landings, this camporee
focussed on the D-day operations from the other side of the English Channel where much of
the planning took place and many of the landing craft left. In particular, the theme of the
camporee was the vital role that women played in the Normandy landings and in the
liberation of Europe.
Troop 401 got to visit various historic sites around Portsmouth during the Camporee.
Mayflower District also arranged a trading card game along the theme of women involved in
the D-Day landings and each Troop was given a card with a text to decode which involved
having to cooperate with other Troops to decipher the code.
On the Sunday of the Campout, Troop 401 attended a Naval memorial service including a
wreath laying ceremony.
